The Pingmei Shenma Group is actively developing Asia’s first large-scale deep salt cavern hydrogen storage project in Beipangzhuang Village, Xiantai Town, Ye County, Pingdingshan City, Henan Province. This project is set to become China’s largest salt cavern hydrogen storage facility.

Salt cavern energy storage is similar to creating a gas tank, but for hydrogen. The process involves drilling wells and forming storage cavities in salt formations where hydrogen can be stored. Once these salt caverns are created, they can effectively store hydrogen gas. The site is located near high-quality salt fields operated by United Salt Chemical Company, and hydrogen for the project will primarily come from Henan Shenma Chlor-Alkali Chemical Co., Ltd.

Liang Wuxing, the Deputy Chief Economist of Pingmei Shenma Group and Deputy Leader of the project, stated that the total investment for the project is 77.72 million yuan. The pilot phase for the salt cavern hydrogen storage system is expected to be completed by September 2025. This project will help the Pingmei Shenma Group address its current challenges in hydrogen transportation and storage, complete the full hydrogen energy supply chain from production to storage, transportation, and usage, and lay a strong foundation for the company’s expansion into the hydrogen energy sector.

Li Yanhe, the General Manager of Pingmei Shenma Group, stressed the importance of focusing on developing a technical framework for the pilot hydrogen storage system. He also emphasized the need to outline a comprehensive development plan for hydrogen resource utilization. The group aims to establish a unique hydrogen industry system combining “surface production, rock cavern storage, integrated transport, and comprehensive utilization” and to roll out pilot projects. The goal is to position the facility as China’s leading salt cavern hydrogen storage center.
