With the increasing depletion of fossil resources and the worsening of the ecological environment, biobased and biodegradable materials have received widespread attention due to their renewability and environmental friendliness. Under the goal of carbon neutrality, bio based materials benefit from their excellent carbon reduction capabilities and have become a beneficial choice to replace and supplement petrochemical based materials. The wave of "plastic restrictions and bans" sparked by various countries and regions has pushed the biodegradable materials industry to the forefront.

Biobased materials refer to polymer materials synthesized through biological or chemical means, with all or part of the production materials sourced from biological renewable resources. This material has a wide range of boundaries and types. According to their biodegradability, they are divided into two categories: biodegradable materials (PLA, PHA, etc.) and non biodegradable materials (bio based PE/PP, etc.).

Global Development of Biodegradable Materials

Degradable materials have undergone more than half a century of development, and in the past 20 years, the research and development focus has been on biodegradable materials. According to statistics from Ju Ru Ru Information, as of the end of 2022, the total global production capacity of biodegradable materials is approximately 1.92 million tons per year (excluding starch based plastics), with PLA and PBS series products accounting for 87% of the total production capacity. The global production capacity is mainly distributed in China, Western Europe, and North America. China started late, but its development speed is fast, with a total production capacity of 1.36 million tons per year, accounting for 71.1% of the global production capacity. Currently, China is building or planning to build a production capacity of over 10 million tons of biodegradable materials, which will continue to lead global capacity growth.
