‌Tempered glass will not break due to weight‌. The rupture of tempered glass is mainly caused by self-explosion, external impact or temperature changes. The self-explosion rate of tempered glass is about one thousandth to three thousandths. The main reason is the phase change expansion of nickel sulfide particles in the glass. Especially under extreme high temperatures, the probability of tempered glass self-explosion will be higher. In addition, external impact and temperature changes are also common causes of tempered glass breakage‌. 

 

What is Tempered Glass: 

 

Tempered glass, also known as toughened glass, is a type of safety glass that has been treated through controlled thermal or chemical processes to increase its strength compared to normal glass. This process involves heating the glass to a temperature of around 620 to 660 degrees Celsius (about 1,150 to 1,220 degrees Fahrenheit) and then rapidly cooling it. The result is a material that is significantly more resistant to impact, thermal stress, and bending while maintaining crystal clarity and an elegant aesthetic.

 

Tempered glass is engineered to provide maximum strength and durability. It is produced using a meticulous process that ensures uniform heating and cooling, resulting in a glass that can withstand considerable mechanical stress. When broken, tempered glass shatters into small, blunt pieces rather than sharp, jagged shards, minimizing the risk of injury. This characteristic makes it a popular choice in a variety of applications where safety is a priority.

 

The manufacturing of tempered glass begins with high-quality raw materials, primarily silica, soda ash, and limestone, which are melted together and formed into sheets. Once the glass has cooled to a certain point, it is cut to size, and the tempering process begins. The glass is heated in a furnace to just below its melting point and then rapidly cooled in a process known as quenching. This creates a balance of surface compression and internal tensile strength, making tempered glass much stronger than standard annealed glass.

 

What Can Cause The Breaking of Tempered Glass: 

 

Self-explosion: Due to the phase change and expansion of nickel sulfide particles in the tempered glass, temperature changes are the direct cause of self-explosion, which often occurs at the turn of seasons and in the south and west directions with strong solar radiation.

 

External impact‌: Tempered glass is easily broken when it is impacted by external force, especially if the edge of tempered glass is damaged, it will completely shatter.

 

Temperature change: Tempered glass has good thermal stability and can withstand a temperature difference three times that of ordinary glass. It can withstand a temperature change of 300°C. However, under extreme high temperatures, the probability of self-destruction will be higher.
